Many of the IT organizations I speak with have started their journey to a private cloud model. Every road has its speed bumps: knowing what they are likely to be helps a great deal. I thought it'd be useful to simply share my perspectives of likely issues, concerns and challenges that tend to show up in each phase of the journey

If you've been following this blog for a while, you know I've been describing how EMC's IT organization is progressing in re-envisioning our IT capabilities based on a private cloud model. You've seen bits and pieces here on this blog, as well as EMC IT's own web site . Today, I received a nice white paper entitled " EMC IT's Journey To The Private Cloud: A Practitioner's Guide ". While not as complete as many of us would like, it does serve as a nice contextual overview of of our journey: the rationale, the phases and the results to date.

Hi everyone. I had the pleasure of jumping over to Paris to deliver a short keynote this week. When I do this, sometimes I use material I've used before. Other times, I try and mix it up a bit and try something different. Such is the case here. I wanted to make this presentation all about the big ideas that are going on in our industry today, especially as it applies to IT infrastructure, since it directly and indirectly impacts all other aspects of IT. I wanted to make a point to try and stay away from individual technologies (and their associated product incarnations), and focus instead on how technology is being built, deployed and consumed. As part of my role here at EMC, I get to talk to all sorts of interesting consumers of IT: enterprises, partners — and, more recently, the more nascent category of "IT service providers". I think of service providers as a new channel for the IT industry. Yes, we've seen outsourcers and hosters and all manner of people who will offer to run various aspects of IT on your behalf, but enough has changed recently that the whole discussion is somewhat fresh again. Given that I spend a lot of time with enterprises and more traditional partners as well, I have a pretty good sense of what people might want, and why they might want it.

"Nothing good is easy ; nothing easy is good". I don't remember who said that originally, but that thought has always stuck in my head. And as I work with more organizations who have started down a private cloud road (or something very similar), I'm beginning to see repeatable patterns emerge
